Owing to Covid-restrictions, numbers allowed to attend Hugh’s funeral are sadly very limited: we are not able to accommodate anywhere near the numbers who would probably wish to be there and so the funeral is necessarily private. We are very sorry about this, as we would have wanted all of Hugh’s many friends and teammates to be able to be there, as indeed would Hugh have done.
However, the service will be live-streamed via webcast on the day:
For anyone wishing to watch the live-stream webcast of Hugh’s funeral on the 20th, login details are as follows: -
Service Date 20-Apr-21 at 11:00
Service Chapel Chapel - Beetham Hall
Webcast: Live Webcast
Please enter this username and password exactly as above. You can login to the Obitus website at any time to view a test connection (and we strongly recommend you do this) but you'll only be able to view the Live Webcast approx. 5 mins before the service start time.
Please be aware this is a public building and the timing of the Live webcast is semi-automated to allow for services running early or late – please use your discretion if you can see activities not applicable to the service you are here to watch.
Arrangements in St. Michael’s on the day of the funeral:
The funeral car will be travelling through St. Michael’s shortly before 10am on Tuesday 20th and travelling down Hall Lane past the bowling green, then turning right onto the A586. The funeral cortege will stop briefly at St Michael’s Garage for the Funeral Director to get into the car. Anyone who wishes to pay their respects or say goodbye to Hugh could stand along the route. We would advise anyone wishing to do so to be there from around 15-20 minutes before.
We politely ask that anyone doing this please observes appropriate physical distancing. For the avoidance of any confusion, the funeral is not taking place at the church in St Michael’s.
Parking should be on the Village Hall car park please on Blackpool Road as far as possible, to avoid over-crowding by school or at The Grapes.
If anyone would like to say a private goodbye to Hugh before the day of the funeral, please contact the Funeral Director, Greg Hodgkinson, on 01995 601600 (https://greghodgkinsonfunerals.co.uk/). Please note that visits can be made by appointment only.
Donations in memory of Hugh
Hugh’s family will be passing on donations from anyone who wishes to make a donation in his memory, to either of the following:
· Trinity Hospice, Blackpool;
· A fund for the development of a memorial woodland for Hugh in St. Michael's-on-Wyre, which is envisaged to be adjacent to the public footpath across the river from Hugh's house. The money would be used to buy new trees for this area.
Donations can be made by emailing the Funeral Director to request the bank details for their donations account and the procedure for this: email@example.com
Hugh’s family would like to thank everyone again for the overwhelming support received, which has been enormously helpful to us. We plan to hold a memorial celebration for Hugh during the summer, once Covid restrictions are (we hope) removed, for all those close to Hugh to attend.

Blackpool Evening Gazette Tuesday 6th April By Andy Moore The Fylde and Lancashire bowling family pays tribute to popular and respected stalwart, Hugh Hornby The Lancashire crown green bowling scene has lost one of its most popular and respected figures in Hugh Hornby, who passed away a week before his 52nd birthday. By Andy Moore Tuesday, 6th April 2021, 12:30 pm A dedicated player, administrator, historian and author from St Michael’s on Wyre, Hugh devoted much of his life to his beloved sport. A former secretary of the North Lancashire and Fylde County Bowling Association and Fylde County chairman, Hugh also served on the Fylde Federation and was chairman of the Longridge and District Mixed League. Hugh Hornby: player, administrator, author, historian and a hugely popular figure in Lancashire bowling He was also a top county player, who represented North Lancashire and Fylde many times, also playing with distinction for the St Michael’s and Singleton clubs. Born in Blackpool, Hugh always resided at the family home in St Michael’s except for his years at boarding school (Lancaster Royal Grammar) and Oxford University, where he studied modern history. Rebecca, one of Hugh’s two sisters, said: “He played in leagues in Fylde, Preston, Woodplumpton and Longridge but he was very much a St Michael’s man. “He loved being part of the village. He enjoyed being away to study but missed the bowling, so on leaving Oxford he came home and got involved.” Hugh became a renowned authority on the game and wrote the definitive history ‘Bowled Over: The Bowling Greens of Britain’, chronicling the sport’s development from the 16th to the 21st centuries. A keen football follower too, Hugh’s first book was ‘Uppies and Downies: The Extraordinary Football Games of Britain’ and he also wrote the ‘DK Eyewitness Guide to Football’. The latter was produced in association with the National Football Museum, where Hugh worked. His extensive research was invaluable in establishing the museum, which opened in 2001 at Preston North End’s Deepdale stadium, and Hugh served as curator until the museum moved to Manchester in 2012. Rebecca added: “Hugh’s love of social history really came to the fore at the football museum. “He was one of the chief researchers and wrote all the panels on the wall. “After leaving the museum Hugh had articles published on a variety of subjects, including a series for Lancashire Life about the natural world, and he also worked as a copy editor and proofreader.” It is for his services to crown green bowling that Hugh will be an impossible act to follow around the Fylde and throughout Lancashire. Peter Jose, chairman of the Fylde Amateur Bowling Association, said: “Hugh was a very popular person and a great enthusiast. “You could ask him anything about bowling and he would have the answer. “Hugh was chairman of the North Lancs and Fylde Association and was our Fylde representative. “You couldn’t fault Hugh at all and he was probably the most respected person I’ve known in bowling. He was also a very good player.” Ricky Cochrane, who is in charge of bowling at Blackpool’s iconic Waterloo venue, added: “All aspects of Lancashire bowling – you name it, Hugh was involved in it. “Everybody has been shocked and saddened by his sudden death. “Hugh was a true stalwart of the game and a brilliant administrator, fulfilling more roles than I can mention. “He was also a very good player and fierce competitor. This is exceptionally sad news for the crown green bowling family.” As chairman of the Longridge competition, Hugh had been working as diligently as ever towards its restart after the pandemic. Fixtures have been postponed as a mark of respect to his family. Darrel Edwards, president of the Longridge and District Mixed League, said: “Hugh had that bit of magic the top players have, and when he first came to us, we’d go down to the club just to watch him. You’d sit back and enjoy it. “He was a good opponent too because he was always a fair player. “If he knew his opponent was struggling, he would always encourage them. “Hugh was always on hand and would spend time with everyone.”

Great news BCGBA have published the guidelines allowing us to start bowling the 29th of March. Organised club events and matches are permitted. Like last year, but there is not a maximum number stated. So, we do not have to limit to 30. However, we should be sensible and agree a safe maximum. None organised games (roll ups) are limited to the rule of 6. Slots must be booked in advance to comply with track and trace. The clubhouse must remain closed. The toilets will be open. We can serve drinks from the hatch using disposable cups. We will continue to log all players for track and trace. Sanitisers etc will be available and we expect all members to adhere to social distancing were possible on the green and whilst waiting to play. Looking forward to Monday.

BCGBA Update The rules of the Association indicate a fee of £35-00 being the annual fee payable by Member Clubs. The BCGBA Executive committee is not able to alter the fee without a rule change at the Annual General Meeting, so the fee therefore remains at £35-00. However, following analysis of the current financial position and to help struggling clubs we have agree to subsidise the fee for 2021. Member clubs who have paid the fee for 2020 (to be confirmed by Members Counties by 31st January) will therefore have a subsidy in 2021. Clubs who have not paid the 2020 fee to their County association by this date will not be able to take advantage of the subsidy and must pay full fees for both 2020 and 2021. Clubs who have not paid will remain on the suspended list until the fee for 2020 and 2021 is paid and will not be able to enter any competitive bowling until this has been paid. Member Clubs who have paid the 2020 fees in full, will pay just £20-00 in 2021 adding up to a total of £55-00 over the 2 years in question. This £20-00 must be paid in accordance with normal County Association collection methods and submitted to BCGBA as per the rules

CORONAVIRUS – UPDATE (11/09/20)
Following the recent announcement and changes to the Covid Legislation we can confirm clubs can continue to offer organised bowling activity in a Covid-safe manner. Phase 3 falls within the sporting exemption allowed. Clubs should continue to follow the Phase 3 guidance and be aware that this is now backed up by the legislation changes. You can continue to take part in organised outdoor sports when restrictions on social gatherings are introduced from Monday 14th September.
With the end of the season fast approaching we hope that members are able to get out and enjoy the remainder of the year in a safe controlled way. Clubs should continue to maintain track and trace records which should be available for 21 days if they are requested by NHS track and trace.

BCGBA STATEMENT Following discussions with each County Association and a County level survey on BCGBA National competitions, we have decided to roll over all competitions to 2021.
This covers the Men’s, Juniors, Veterans and Ladies competitions. This means that the fixtures for all our 2020 County Championships (Seniors, Juniors, Ladies) will be moved to 2021, with a subsequent delay in the 5-year rota for the Men’s County Championship.
The Presidential Rota’s will also carry over to 2021 with the Men’s Senior Merit remaining in Cumbria, Junior Merit in Greater Manchester and Ladies Merit in Greater Manchester.
The Men’s World Club Championships Qualifiers for 2020 will also roll over to 2021 and we will issue further information when we are able to do so. It is hoped to find a suitable date to complete the 2019 Ladies Champions of Champions later in the year, subject to restrictions allowing.
The Handbook 2020 will therefore cover 2020/2021 and an addendum will be produced in 2021 to reflect date changes etc. This will be updated on the website as soon as we are able to confirm dates and agreement with relevant venues. This decision has been taken to ensure that we are able to protect the safety of our membership as at this time it is not possible to ensure we would be able to complete matches and qualifiers in a safe and secure way.
